INTRO: A senior Russian general says the number of
troops deployed in Chechnya will be reduced, now that
the regional capital, Grozny, is in almost completely
in government hands. V-O-A's Peter Heinlein reports
from Moscow.
TEXT: The deputy chief of staff, General Valery
Manilov says plans are being made for a partial
withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya.

He says, "We have decided to start preparations for a
pullout of a considerable portion of the troops there,
because the scale and character of the operation
allows it."
The decision comes days after Chechen rebels
apparently gave up their defense of Grozny. Russian
officials say they are close to having the ruined city
under full control after weeks of fighting.
A Russian spokesman recently said 93-thousand troops
are in Chechnya, but unofficial sources estimate the
figure is far higher. Military officials say plans
call for a permanent force of 15-thousand troops to be
stationed in the republic once the fighting is over.
