INTRO: Witnesses have wrapped up their testimony in a
Senegalese court where a judge will decide whether to
prosecute former Chadian ruler Hissene Habre on
charges of crimes against humanity. Correspondent
Laurie Kassman has more from our West Africa bureau.
TEXT: Seven plaintiffs have presented their evidence
to convince a Senegalese court that former Chadian
ruler Hissene Habre should be prosecuted for crimes
against humanity. The witnesses told of torture and
murder of thousands during Mr. Habre's eight-year rule
in the mid-1980's.
Human Rights Watch, which has spearheaded the effort,
says the extradition case in London against former
Chilean ruler Augusto Pinochet inspired their efforts.
The Senegalese judge is expected to hear Mr. Habre's
defense of his administration before deciding whether
a trial is warranted. Hissene Habre has lived in
exile in Dakar since he was overthrown in 1990.
