BAE SYSTEMS Joins Sanders - Litton JSF EW Team

NASHUA, NH, January 31st, 2000 -- Sanders, a Lockheed Martin Company, has selected BAE SYSTEMS of Stanmore, England (formerly Marconi Avionics Ltd.) as an Electronic Warfare/Countermeasures subcontractor, and part of the Sanders - Litton team, for the Lockheed Martin Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). BAE SYSTEMS will provide electronic modules, as well as modeling and simulation capability, in support of the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (E&MD) and production phases of the JSF EW program. Sanders and Litton Advanced Systems are currently Technology Partners working with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, Fort Worth, Texas, to provide the EW suite for the advanced Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft.

"BAE SYSTEMS is a great addition to the Sanders - Litton partnership," said Peter Shaw, Director of Mission Systems for the Lockheed Martin JSF Team. "The integrated EW team of Sanders, Litton and BAE SYSTEMS capture the skills, experience and technology needed to meet the challenging performance and affordability goals of JSF in the electronic warfare and countermeasures area."

BAE SYSTEMS, through Marconi Avionics Ltd. heritage, has a long history of designing and producing high quality EW systems and electronic units and has demonstrated capability in key technology areas. The company is regarded as an industry leader for radio frequency (RF) countermeasures, having provided combat-proven equipment for United Kingdom military aircraft. BAE SYSTEMS is currently under contract to provide an Integrated Defensive Aids Suite for the WAH-64 (UK Apache) Helicopter program, for which Sanders is providing the missile warning system, and is also the Defensive Aids lead for the Eurofighter (Typhoon) program.

"The Lockheed Martin JSF program will benefit from the technical synergies of these other product development programs, reducing costs and time to market," said Jay Herther, Director of the Lockheed Martin JSF EW development program being led by Sanders. He noted that BAE SYSTEMS has comprehensive RF EW modeling and simulation capabilities, which provide both the data necessary to optimize EW designs and the tools to comprehensively assess EW system effectiveness.

Herther added, "These (BAE SYSTEMS) modeling tools will be used to validate and develop system design concepts early in the program as part of our 'right first time' philosophy. This generates customer confidence in the operational effectiveness of the product and lowers cost." Herther said that Sanders "has already established a solid working relationship with BAE SYSTEMS which we expect to continue into all phases of the program."

Sanders, with headquarters in Nashua, N.H., is an operating company of the Lockheed Martin Corporation. Sanders is a major producer of aircraft self-protection systems and tactical surveillance and intelligence systems for all branches of the armed forces. Other major business areas include microwave, mission and space electronics; infrared imaging; and automated mission planning systems.
