INTRO: Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid Monday
dismissed his country's former top general from his
cabinet, following release of an official inquiry that
found General Wiranto was involved in human-rights
abuses last year in East Timor. V-O-A's Barry Wood
reports from Davos, Switzerland, where President Wahid
is attending the World Economic Forum.
TEXT: President Wahid says he is asking General
Wiranto to resign from the cabinet, where he serves as
chief minister for politics and security. Mr. Wahid
spoke to reporters Monday evening.
/// WAHID ACT ///
Yes, yes. I've already prepared his
replacement. But I will not reveal his name
yet.
/// END ACT ///
President Wahid says the Indonesian judiciary will
consider whether General Wiranto should be put on
trial.
The investigation is seen as a test of the new
government's ability to curb the power of the
Indonesian military. President Wahid says he does not
intend to cut short his European trip to return to
Jakarta. (Signed)
