VOICED AT:
INTRO: The nine-month strike at Mexico's largest
university appears to have reached a turning point.
Striking students have agreed to meet with their non-
striking counterparts in an effort to end the
conflict. Cindy Lavanderos has more details from
Mexico City.
TEXT: Striking and non-striking students plan to meet
over the next few days to discuss possible solutions
to the shutdown, the longest in the history of the
National University.
At least 20 student meetings are planned over the
weekend to decide how to proceed. It is not yet clear
if students will try to end the strike in stages, or
all at once.
The decision to talk came after non-striking students
tried unsuccessfully to take over the university's
main campus on Wednesday. Though no serious violence
took place, tensions ran high during the
confrontation. /// Opt /// Students tried to take
over the campus again the next day, but strikers had
strengthened their barricades, preventing them from
gaining access to the area. /// End Opt ///
Dozens of strikers abandoned three sites outside the
main university campus this week, turning the
facilities over to university officials. Police moved
in shortly after the strikers left.
Students started the strike nine-months ago to protest
an increase in tuition. Since then, new demands have
been added, including a greater student role in
running the university. (SIGNED)
