GEORGY SHPAK: RUSSIAN AIR-BORNE TROOPS LOSE FOUR MEN IN WOUNDED IN VEDENO DISTRICT OF CHECHNYA
21.01.2000 14:20 RIA Novosti The grouping of the Russian air-borne troops operating in the Vedeno area of Chechnya lost four men in wounded during the past week. All of them received only slight wounds and have already returned to the line. RIA Novosti learned this from Colonel General Georgy Shpak, the air-borne troops Commander. The General said that at present the Russian air-borne troops are improving their firing positions, conducting reconnaissance work, occupying the dominating heights around Vedeno. Thereby the air-borne troops provide the possibility to the interior troops of the Interior Ministry to "quietly" continue their mopping-up operations and passports check-ups. The marines closely cooperate with the air-borne troops. All the separatists and hirelings who were in Vedeno have been driven into the mountains, and part of them have fled under the disguise of peaceful people. RIA Novosti was told by a spokesman for the command of the Eastern grouping, among whom the marine units are operating, that during the period between January 1 and 21, the seamen did not lose a single man in killed and none in wounded in the Vedeno area.
