EVERY EFFORT MADE TO FIND MISSING GENERAL, SAYS DEFENCE MINISTRY REPRESENTATIVE

21.01.2000 13:00 RIA Novosti

In the Ministry of Defence RIA Novosti was told on Friday that the command of the United Groupings of forces in the North Caucasus is making every effort to find the Deputy Commander of the "north" grouping, Major General Mikhail Malofeyev, who went missing on 18th January in the north-western part of Grozny during attempts to liberate the city. According to a ministry representative, the search for the general has so far been unsuccessful.

The round-the-clock search for the general, who heads the military preparations of the 58th army, started on the 19th January. Specially prepared reconnaissance sub-divisions of the Russian forces were immediately employed, actively using service dogs. It was pointed out to RIA Novosti in the Ministry of Defence, that the search has been complicated by the circumstances. It must be conducted in the so-called "neutral zone", which is neither controlled by federal forces, nor by gunmen, but where the latter can organise ambushes and "cut the troops to pieces". Therefore, the reconnaissance sub-divisions while acting most intensively, must also be extremely cautious.
