INTRO: Russian military forces are intensifying their
attacks on Chechnya's southern mountains, as Russian
leaders face renewed pressure from the Council of
Europe to halt the military campaign. Moscow
Correspondent Eve Conant reports Russia's acting
President Vladimir Putin told a European delegation
the West is relying too heavily on biased coverage of
the war.
TEXT: David Russell-Johnston backed down from earlier
comments that the Council of Europe might suspend
Russia's membership. But he said he and Mr. Putin
discussed several issues.
/// RUSSELL-JOHNSTON ACT ///
Resolutions concerning the cease-fire,
concerning negotiations, concerning the free
movement of refugees, and access of humanitarian
organizations.
/// END ACT ///
But acting President Putin defended the campaign and
said the West is relying to heavily on what he called
questionable media reports to judge Moscow's
offensive.
The Council of Europe delegation is expected to visit
the Caucasus, including Russian-occupied parts of
Chechnya beginning Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Russia's military intensified air attacks
on Chechnya's southern mountains and said it would
soon control the rebel capital, Grozny. (SIGNED)
