VOICED AT:
INTRO: The U-S ambassador to the United Nations,
Richard Holbrooke, has repeated his call for the
removal of militia members from refugee camps in West
Timor and also criticized some leaders of the
Indonesian military. V-O-A correspondent Breck Ardery
reports on Mr. Holbrooke's remarks today (Friday) at
the United Nations.
TEXT: Speaking to reporters after a private Security
Council meeting on East Timor, Mr. Holbrooke decried
the fact that there are still 100-thousand people from
East Timor in refugee camps in West Timor, part of
Indonesia. Many of them, he said, are afraid to go
home because of what he calls "lies" being told them
by pro-Indonesian militia groups operating in the
camps. He says the militia members should be removed
from the camps and integrated into Indonesian society.
/// HOLBROOKE ACT ///
They are like a street gang that controls the
block and is being offered something they are
not so impressed with - which is the chance to
get a good, decent-paying job, but not one which
allows them to swagger around. These are real
thugs and they have to be dealt with.
/// END ACT ///
Mr. Holbrooke also criticized members of the
Indonesian military, whom he said are trying to impede
democratic reforms in Indonesia and are resisting
investigations into what happened in East Timor. Mr.
Holbrooke said it is vitally important for the
civilian leadership in Indonesia to get the full
support of the people. (Signed)
