INTRO: Algeria's largest Islamic rebel group has
reportedly dissolved itself after all its members
received a full pardon from President Abdelaziz
Bouteflika. V-O-A Correspondent Scott Bobb
reports form our Middle East Bureau in Cairo that
as part of the deal, the rebels have also agreed
to turn in all their weapons.
TEXT: Algerian television announced the
dissolution in a statement, which it said was
signed by the chief of the Islamic Salvation
Army.
The Salvation Army was the armed wing of the
Islamic Salvation Front, which was poised to win
national elections eight years ago that were
cancelled by the military. The Front negotiated a
cease-fire after the election of President
Bouteflika last April.
The announcement came two days before the
expiration of an amnesty to all the rebels. These
include two other groups that have vowed to
continue the struggle in which an estimated 100
thousand people have died. (SIGNED)
