VIOLENCE IN ACEH

Date Reported: Tuesday, January 11, 2000
Incident Type: SECURITY
Country: BANDA ACEH, INDONESIA

Incident: The weekly Serambi (Banda Aceh) reported the following incidents of violence in Aceh:

On or about December 30, two intelligence NCOs (non-commissioned) were riding tandem on a motorbike as they returned to their local military headquarters, when they were overtaken by two persons also riding tandem on a motorbike. The passenger on the second motorbike drew a pistol from his belt and fired several rounds at the two NCOs and then fled from the scene. The motorbike carrying the military members skidded and crashed after the shots were fired, throwing rider and passenger into the air. The rider of the motorbike suffered abrasions from the fall, but was not seriously hurt. The second NCO, riding as passenger, was hit by one round which went through his cheek, shattering all his teeth and causing painful injuries.

In another incident, a police sergeant on his way to the mosque for Friday forenoon services, was attacked by an unknown assailant, repeatedly stabbed and ultimately disemboweled. The victim was taken to a nearby clinic in the district of Aceh Timur, where he died soon after. The perpetrator made a clean getaway.

In a third incident, a military non-commissioned officer in a market to buy fish, was accosted by a gang of young thugs who stabbed him to death on the spot. As he lay dying, the victim called for help, but nearby shopowners, afraid of involvement in the incident, and being designated as witnesses, locked up their shops and fled.
