AMBUSH IN ACEH
Date Reported: Tuesday, January 11, 2000
Incident Type: SECURITY
Country: BANDA ACEH, INDONESIA Incident: The daily Waspada from Medan (northern Sumatra) reported that a police and Indonesian marine corps convoy was ambushed recently in Aceh. The incident occurred when a convoy of six trucks carrying Indonesian military and police units was attacked by fire in Bireuen District of Aceh after dark. In a firefight lasting some 20 minutes, five members of the security forces were wounded. The convoy was investigating the presence of AMM (Aceh Merdeka Movement) insurgents in the jungled hills of the district, when it came under fire. This action followed a report that the AMM had abducted two non-commissioned officers from a local military command post in the neighboring district of Aceh Timur. The military personnel remain missing. In a separate action, an unknown terrorist (probably an AMM militant) threw a grenade into a local military command post in the district of Aceh Utara. No one was injured, but the blast caused heavy damage to the headquarters. The perpetrator made a clean getaway. In a third violent incident, unknown terrorists (probably AMM militants) attempted to blow up a passing truck carrying Indonesian military personnel. The bomb missed its target and instead killed three water buffaloes, and burnt down several small stores. The incident occurred on the national highway between Banda Aceh and Medan in Pidie district of Aceh. (RISC Comment: There is little likelihood the abducted military members will be seen alive again. The AMM usually has tortured and/or killed Indonesian armed forces members who have fallen into its hands.)
