SHINING PATH CAPTURE PERUVIAN RIVER BOAT

Country: HUANCAYO DEPARTMENT, PERU Incident: The Lima daily "El Comercio" reported that a column of 30 suspected Shining Path rebels attacked and captured a Peruvian government riverboat on the Ene river near the municipality of San Martin de Pangoa, Huancayo Department. According to the report, a small contingent of guerrillas boarded the ship and forced it to the river's bank, where the rest of the column plundered the ship's cargo, a consignment of oats, powdered milk and other foodstuffs destined for the impoverished communities on the Ene's left bank as part of the government's "Glass of Milk" social program. The boat and its crew were later released. No casualties were reported.
