Lockheed Martin Receives $69 Million Contract for Army Tactical Missile System
DALLAS, TX, December 21st, 1999 -- Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control - Dallas has received a $69.7 million contract for the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) Block IA Missile. The contract, Full-Rate Production III (FRP-III), calls for the company to produce 110 ATACMS Block IA missiles. Delivery of the missiles is expected to be completed by December 2001.
The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) is the contracting agency. The missiles will be produced at the company's facilities in Dallas and El Paso, Texas.
ATACMS was the first tactical surface-to-surface missile ever fired in combat by the U.S. Army, when it was deployed in Operation Desert Storm. Production of the missile was accelerated so that it could be used against high priority targets.
Out of Desert Storm came a requirement for more range, resulting in the development of the 300 kilometer Block IA missile. Each ATACMS Block IA has a reduced Antipersonnel/Antimateriel (APAM) payload and a GPS receiver to ensure accuracy and sufficient lethality to defeat high-priority targets, such as mobile launchers at depth.
Located in Dallas and Orlando, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control develops, manufactures and supports advanced combat, missile, rocket and space systems. The company is organized in six program/mission areas: Strike Weapons, Air Defense, Anti-Armor, Fire Control and Sensors, Fire Support and Product Development.
