Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems-Syracuse to Supply Radars for Croatia

SYRACUSE, NY, December 9th, 1999 -- Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems-Syracuse (NE&SS Syracuse) today announced that the U.S. government has approved a license allowing it to provide an integrated radar surveillance system to meet civil and military needs for Croatia. The contract, valued at $94 million, includes construction in Syracuse of five long-range, dual-use FPS-117E(1)T radars with associated display consoles and five monopulse secondary surveillance radars. Also included are three operations centers equipped with large-screen displays and airspace management consoles. In addition to work performed in the U.S., Croatian industry will benefit from the program. The communication system linking all the sites will use the expanding Croatian telecommunications network. Civil work necessary to prepare radar and operations center sites may also be undertaken by Croatian industry.

As a dual-use system, a primary, day-to-day application will be to provide enhanced air traffic control radar coverage over all Croatian air space as well as that of neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina. The enhanced radar coverage will increase the Croatian Civil Aviation Authority's ability to provide civil airspace management at all flight levels.

In addition, the FPS-117 radars will be equipped with special software modifications permitting the surveillance of coastal regions along Croatia's Dalmatian Coast. This will permit the Croatian Coast Guard to perform enhanced maritime search and rescue operations as well as monitoring of commercial shipping to ensure that environmentally sensitive coastal areas are protected. Another use will be for Croatian law enforcement, which will have enhanced capability to monitor and control coastal border areas.

Work is scheduled to be completed in two years.

"We're very pleased to be able to provide this system for Croatia," said Mike Smith, president of NE&SS-Syracuse. "This has been truly a team effort involving highly qualified engineers from the Croatian Air Force along with NE&SS-Syracuse systems and software engineering and product support. The team has developed a state-of-the-art integrated surveillance system that will support Croatian infrastructure growth and national defense needs for decades."

Lockheed Martin Finance Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation, assisted in arranging the financing for the Croatian Ministry of Finance through Chase Manhattan Bank, supported by a guarantee from the Export-Import Bank of the United States.
