NASHUA, NH, December 7th, 1999 -- Sanders, a Lockheed Martin Company, has delivered the core software that will be used for upcoming U.S. Navy and Air Force tests of the Integrated Defensive Electronics Countermeasures (IDECM) Radio Frequency Countermeasures (RFCM) system. The computer code, known as Block 4 software, was provided Nov. 24 to the Boeing St. Louis F/A-18E/F integration laboratory, to Sanders' B-1B Defensive Systems Upgrade Program integration laboratory, and to the Naval Air Weapon Center-Weapons Division Laboratory, Pt. Mugu, Calif. The new software further expands IDECM's capability to counter a wide range of radar-guided missiles. According to Joe Mancini, Sanders' Integrated Product Team Lead, "Block 4 incorporates significant additional functionality -- such as Receiver Gain Control and Linearization -- which provides the system's Fiber Optic Towed Decoy with enhanced ability to defeat RF threats. Providing this delivery ahead of schedule was an important team accomplishment for ITT Industries and Sanders."

With delivery of the software occurring a week before it was due, the overall IDECM RFCM integration progress also remains ahead of schedule, said Steve Morais, Sanders' IDECM Program Manager. He noted that the early delivery "marks a keystone event to provide the Air Force and the U.S. Navy with significant end-to-end countermeasure capability. The program is well positioned to support the upcoming demanding test phases for both services."

IDECM RFCM is currently undergoing development flight testing at China Lake, Calif., with early tests having demonstrated effectiveness of the IDECM RFCM suite and the Fiber

Optic Towed Decoy. The Block 4 version of software provides the foundation for the final software delivery incorporating additional enhancements in late summer of 2000 which will be used during the Operational Evaluation (OPEVAL) test phase.

IDECM RFCM incorporates avionics, including the on-board receiver and processing system developed and manufactured by ITT Industries' Avionics Division, and the off-board countermeasures which include the high power Fiber Optic Towed Decoy developed by Sanders. The combination of high sensitivity receivers and off-board countermeasures will provide a highly effective EW defense for U.S. military aircraft against both current and future RF missile threats. The F/A-18E/F will be the first aircraft to receive IDECM RFCM, followed by the B-1B bomber. The Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase will continue through the year 2000, with a Low Rate Initial Production decision scheduled for November 2000, and initial operating capability of IDECM RFCM occurring in 2003.
