Lockheed Martin Fighter Aircraft Unit Expands Product Support

Fort Worth, Texas, December 1st, 1999 -- Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems (LMTAS) of Fort Worth, Texas, opened its new Product Support Center today. The center is designed to enhance worldwide support of the company’s products through the use of leading-edge information and communication technologies.

The center initially will focus on the worldwide F-16 fleet, consisting of more than 3,000 aircraft operated by 19 air forces from 80 bases worldwide. Currently, LMTAS ties its customers together through a field information network that has evolved with the needs of the F-16 program. The Product Support Center will demonstrate new integrated information, communication and support business concepts to enhance F-16 program support, while breaking ground to address the emerging needs of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program.

"The Product Support Center will demonstrate the synergy between e-commerce-based business practices and the integration of technical information for new programs such as JSF," said James A. Davis, director of the Product Support Center. "Both elements are essential to increase the responsiveness of a support system and for industry to accept the increased levels of support responsibility being expected in today’s acquisition reform environment."

The challenge to accept Total System Performance and Support Responsibility (TSPSR) and stand accountable for operational metrics such as Not-Mission-Capable (Supply) rates represents a major shift in responsibility to industry. It will require a systematic demonstration of management and business practices that include a capability to provide total asset visibility from around the globe in near real-time.

"The Product Support Center will be used to demonstrate the JSF Integrated Support Center concept and will validate the effectiveness of our support business practices," said Luke J. Gill, vice president of Product Support at LMTAS.

An important element of the Product Support Center is an information partnership with the Air Force Knowledge Management program sponsored by the U. S. Air Force Materiel Command.

"By developing the necessary information system interfaces, the knowledge developed and lessons learned by LMTAS becomes accessible to a wider range of our U.S. Air Force customer community," Gill said. "This information partnership reflects Lockheed Martin’s commitment to acquisition reform, particularly Darleen Druyun’s Lightning Bolt 99-7, the Product Support Partnerships Initiative."

Gill added, "The Product Support Center concept allows us to do what we do best, which is to design affordable and supportable aircraft weapon systems and, then, efficiently provide best-value support and support information technology solutions tailored to the needs of our individual customers."

Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems is a leader in the design, development, systems integration and support of fighter aircraft. Its customers include the military services of the United States and allied countries throughout the world. LMTAS employs approximately 11,000 people at facilities in Fort Worth, Texas, and is a unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation.
