VOICED AT:
INTRO: Pentagon officials say Russia launched three
short-range scud missiles into Chechnya Friday. V-O-
A's Jim Randle reports, the information surfaced at
the joint missile warning center designed to keep
`year two thousand' computer glitches from
accidentally causing war between Moscow and
Washington.
TEXT: U-S spy satellites detected the searing heat
and high speed of the rocket engines, while computers
plotted the likely time and place of their landing.
Russia has used missiles against Chechen targets in
the past.
Journalists learned of the launches at the Center for
Y-2-K Strategic Stability, where U-S and Russian
officers are on watch together in case a Y-2-K
computer problem confuses the computer systems that
warn Washington and Moscow of ballistic missile
attack.
U-S officials say the chance of a computer problem
causing a missile launch are `incredibly remote' but
set up the center as a precaution anyway. No missile
launches that could affect the United States or
territory outside Russia have been reported.
