Press Statement by James B. Foley, Deputy Spokesman
UNITED STATES WELCOMES GEORGIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY'S STATEMENT ON
OPPOSITION TO THE USE OF ITS TERRITORY
The United States welcomes the December 11 statement by the Georgian
Foreign Ministry reiterating Georgia's opposition to the use of its
territory by any forces involved in the conflict in Chechnya. We
strongly support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
The recent comments by Russian Prime Minister Putin pledging Russian
respect for those principles are crucial to avoiding any spillover of
the conflict beyond the borders of Russia.
