Text: U.S. Welcomes Georgia's Position on Conflict in Chechnya
(Georgia opposes use of its territory by any forces involved) (200) The United States welcomes Georgia's reiteration of its opposition to the use of its territory "by any forces involved in the conflict in Chechnya," Deputy State Department Spokesman James Foley said December 11. Foley, Deputy Spokesman UNITED STATES WELCOMES GEORGIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY'S STATEMENT ON OPPOSITION TO THE USE OF ITS TERRITORY The United States welcomes the December 11 statement by the Georgian Foreign Ministry reiterating Georgia's opposition to the use of its territory by any forces involved in the conflict in Chechnya. We strongly support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. The recent comments by Russian Prime Minister Putin pledging Russian respect for those principles are crucial to avoiding any spillover of the conflict beyond the borders of Russia.
