VOICED AT:
INTRO: The U-N refugee agency, U-N-H-C-R, says more
than two-thousand refugees have fled Angola into
Zambia in the past few days. Lisa Schlein in Geneva
reports the refugees are fleeing fighting between
Angolan government and UNITA rebel forces.
TEXT: U-N refugee agency spokesman Ron Redmond says
many of the new refugees have gone to Kalabo, on the
western side of the Zambezi plains. He says aid
workers there registered about one-thousand-450
Angolans. Among them, he says are about 200 military
personnel from the Angolan army. He says they are
being disarmed by Zambian soldiers.
/// REDMOND ACT ONE ///
There are indications that the confrontation has
intensified along the entire border between
Zambia and Angola, of course, on the Angolan
side, raising the possibility of more refugees
to Zambia in coming days.
/// END ACT ///
Mr. Redmond says the United Nations is sending food
and non-food supplies to the area to meet the
increased need of the growing refugee population. In
addition, he says more staff is being deployed to
Meheba, in Zambia's Western province, to coordinate
the relief effort.
He says the refugee agency's biggest concern is trying
to figure out how to transport the refugees quickly
from transit locations along the border to other camps
that are already in existence.
/// REDMOND ACT TWO ///
Logistical difficulties are being compounded
because the Zambezi plains are beginning to
flood because of the rainy season. So, it makes
some of these camps that are inland,
inaccessible by roads. So, now we're looking
at the possibility of using boats.
/// END ACT ///
Zambia has hosted Angolan refugees for decades.
Before this latest influx, more than 32-thousand
refugees from Angola were being accommodated in
Zambia. (Signed)
