INTRO: The United Nations says the Taleban movement
in Afghanistan has guaranteed security for UN
facilities in the country. This after a series of
violent protests against sanctions imposed by the U-N
Security Council Sunday. From the Afghan capital, V-
O-A's Scott Anger reports.
TEXT: The U-N's humanitarian coordinator for
Afghanistan, Erik De Mul, says he has receive
assurances from the Taleban that U-N staff and
property will be protected. As a result, normal U-N
operations will resume starting Thursday.
The United Nations temporarily scaled back it
operations in Afghanistan after angry crowds in the
capital, Kabul, shattered windows and wrecked
equipment at U-N offices. The protests had been
against U-S backed financial and aviation sanctions
imposed on the Taleban for their failure to hand over
suspected terrorist Osama bin Laden for trial.
Mr. De Mul says the U-N is still assessing how much
damage the organization suffered. He says the Taleban
have offered to pay for the damages.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Taleban has issued a
statement asking the people of Afghanistan not to
protest the U-N sanctions. (SIGNED)
