VOICED AT:
INTRO: The United Nations Security Council today
(Tuesday) condemned recent attacks on U-N offices in
Afghanistan, but urged a continuation of humanitarian
assistance to the Afghan people. V-O-A Correspondent
Breck Ardery reports from the United Nations.
TEXT: After a closed-door meeting on Afghanistan,
Security Council President Danilo Turk of Slovenia
read a statement from the Council that strongly
condemns the recent attacks on U-N offices in
Afghanistan. The attacks were triggered by U-N
ordered sanctions against Afghanistan's Taleban rulers
because they refuse turn over terrorism suspect Osama
bin Laden.
Mr. Turk said the attacks on U-N offices could
jeopardize humanitarian assistance to the Afghan
people.
/// TURK ACT ///
The members of the Security Council emphasize
the importance of the humanitarian assistance to
the Afghan people and commend the courage shown
by the U-N and other international personnel as
well as their will to continue, to the extent
possible, to provide humanitarian assistance.
/// END ACT ///
The U-N Security Council also repeated its demand that
the Taleban turn over Osama bin Laden to appropriate
authorities in a country where he will be effectively
brought to justice. (Signed)
