DATE=11/4/1999 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT TITLE=UNHCR / ANGOLA (L-ONLY) NUMBER=2-255809 BYLINE=LISA SCHLEIN DATELINE=GENEVA CONTENT= VOICED AT: INTRO: The U-N Refugee Agency reports there has been a sharp increase in the number of people fleeing Angola into Zambia during the past four weeks. Lisa Schlein in Geneva reports the agency says refugees are fleeing Angola's Moxico province to escape heavy fighting between government and UNITA rebel forces. TEXT: The U-N Refugee Agency says more than 15- hundred refugees from Angola's Moxico province have crossed into Zambia during the past month. It says this is a dramatic increase. U-N-H-C-R Spokesman, Kris Janowski, says during the past year, about 100 new refugees a month have arrived in Zambia. /// JANOWSKI ACT /// The refugees are saying that the battles in the Moxico province between the Angolan army and the UNITA rebels have intensified. People are telling us about being taken from their homes and used as human shields by retreating UNITA troops, fearful of government air strikes. So, it is a very, very grim situation. /// END ACT /// Mr. Janowski says people are extremely fearful and anxious. He says they escaped from the conflict zones and made their way to the border under cover of darkness. Aid workers in Zambia report many of the refugees had walked for days and were very weak on arrival. The U-N Refugee Agency has sent trucks with emergency food supplies and tents to three entry points in Zambia. So far, the Agency has transferred about one- thousand of the new arrivals to existing refugee settlements. The agency says Zambian aid workers are also looking into the possibility of setting up a transit center in the northwestern province of Zambia. That is where the majority of new refugees are crossing. The U-N-H-C-R also reports smaller groups of Angolans have recently arrived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
