VOICED AT:
INTRO: The United Nations says two of its
humanitarian workers in Burundi were killed today
(Tuesday) in an ambush in the southeastern part of
that country. V-O-A's U-N correspondent, Max Ruston,
has the story.
TEXT: U-N officials say the two U-N staff members
were killed and two others were wounded at a refugee
camp in Rutana province. They say the workers were
robbed by ethnic Hutu rebels shortly after their
arrival at the camp on a routine assessment mission.
The rebels then executed two of the U-N workers by
shooting them in the head at close range.
U-N Spokesman Manoel de Almeida e Silva:
/// de Almeida e Silva act ///
Two internationally-recruited United Nations
staff members were killed in Burundi in a road
ambush. One was identified as UNICEF
representative to Burundi Luis Zuniga of Chile.
The second U-N staff member, from the World Food
Program, has not been identified pending
notification of next of kin. Two other U-N
staff from U-N-D-P and U-N-H-C-R were slightly
injured.
/// end act ///
The two workers wounded in the incident are employed
by the U-N Development Program and the U-N High
Commissioner for Refugees.
UNICEF director Carol Bellamy described the killings
as a terrible tragedy. World Food Program chief
Catherine Bertini described them as senseless. She
said 12 World Food Program staff members were killed
in the line of duty last year, representing an outrage
that cannot be sustained.
The killings brought to three the number of U-N staff
workers killed on Tuesday. Earlier in the day a 38-
year-old Bulgarian national, employed by the U-N
Mission in Kosovo, was killed on his first day of work
in Pristina.
U-N Secretary-General Kofi Annan has repeatedly
expressed concern about the dangers facing U-N
humanitarian workers. He has called for more
international support to ensure better protection for
U-N staff members working under dangerous conditions.
