INTRO: The United Nations refugee agency, U-N-H-C-R,
says it soon hopes to speed the return of East
Timorese refugees from West Timor. Lisa Schlein in
Geneva reports that on Friday, the agency airlifted
more than 170 refugees to the East Timor capital,
Dili.
TEXT: The head of the refugee agency, Sadako Ogata,
calls the repatriation of these first East Timorese
refugees a major breakthrough.
The U-N refugee agency says it hopes to return to East
Timor an estimated 230-thousand refugees living in
camps in West Timor. Ms. Ogata says the agency will
increase its staff in both West and East Timor so that
it will be able to better assist the refugees. She
also says the agency is setting up transit centers in
Dili to receive more returnees.

We hope that in the next few days we will
increase the number of people who will go back
daily to about one-thousand. And, we are
setting up capacity to receive them in the
transit centers. By the end of next week, we
should have the capacity to deal with about 50-
thousand people in Dili itself.
