INTRO: A London magistrate has ruled (Friday) that
former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet may be
extradited to Spain to face human-rights charges
arising from his 17-year rule. A Spanish judge says
General Pinochet should be prosecuted for a campaign
of terror against his political opponents. Pamela
McCall reports from London where anti-Pinochet
demonstrators celebrated the magistrate's ruling.

"Murderer." they shout. Even in victory, anti-
Pinochet protestors are not backing down. But there
were scenes of jubilation on the streets outside the
London courthouse when the ruling was announced.
One demonstrator, Patrice Leone, says the ruling is a
major step forward in protecting human rights.

We will see now for the first time there is hope for
the future, a new generation. We're going to start
this millennium without dictatorship, or without
governments that kill people only because they think
differently.

Elation over the ruling was quickly tempered, since
General Pinochet will not be sent to Spain right
away. His lawyers are expected to appeal.
