VOICED AT:
INTRO: Pakistani police have clashed with Kashmiri
activists to stop them from staging a symbolic
crossing of the disputed border in Kashmir. Ayaz Gul
reports from Islamabad police have detained a number
of people to stop what has been called a "suicide
march" into Indian Kashmir from Pakistan.
TEXT: Witnesses say hundreds of activists of the
Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) managed to
force their way through police lines
and marched towards the "Line of Control", which
divides the region between India and Pakistan.
Pakistani police used teargas and fired bullets in the
air to disperse the marchers who gathered at a small
village (Hajira), only 12 kilometers from the disputed
border. Several people have reportedly been injured in
the action.
India has also warned it will shoot anyone crossing
the Kashmir border from the Pakistani side.
The Kashmiri group wants an independent Kashmir and
opposes the "Line of Control".
Eight activists of the group (JKLF) were killed in
1992 after Pakistani forces opened fire to stop a
similar crossing of the disputed border.
