Sep 27, 1999
ATK (Alliant Techsystems) (NYSE: ATK) said it has been awarded a $4 million contract from the U.S. Army Industrial Operations Command, Rock Island, Ill., to supply 30mm ammunition to a U.S. ally in the Middle East for use by that country's AH-64 Apache attack helicopter.
Jed Holzapfel, vice president, International Business Development, said ATK has been supplying allied countries in the Middle East with medium-caliber ammunition since 1990.
"Our customers in the region recognize that medium-caliber rounds produced by ATK are a mainstay in the U.S. ammunition inventory," said Holzapfel. "They also recognize that our market leadership position reflects a long-standing commitment to quality and affordability."
Developed and fielded for the M230 chain gun on the Apache helicopter, ATK's lightweight 30mm ammunition has demonstrated excellent performance at all ranges. ATK also designed and developed the round's point-detonating fuze. The company is the sole-source supplier of the ammunition to the U.S. and its allies.
Work on the contract will be performed by Alliant Ammunition and Powder Company, Radford, Va., and Alliant Kilgore Flares Company, Toone, Tenn., both of which are operating companies within ATK's Conventional Munitions business segment. Additional work also will conducted at Conventional Munitions manufacturing facility in New Brighton, Minn.
The Conventional Munitions segment designs and produces ammunition, munitions propellants, tactical missile propulsion systems, warheads, and metal parts, composite structures for aircraft and weapons systems, infrared countermeasure flares, and commercial gunpowder. Operations are conducted by three companies: Alliant Ammunition and Powder Company, Alliant Missile Products Company, and Alliant Kilgore Flares Company.
Conventional Munitions reported fiscal year 1999 sales of $481 million. It employs approximately 2,800 people at facilities in Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, New Jersey, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
ATK is a $1.1 billion aerospace and defense company with leading market positions in munitions, solid propulsion, composite structures, and precision electronic fuzes.
