INTRO: Troops from INTERFET, the United Nations
peacekeeping force in East Timor, have carried out
what spokesmen call another successful anti-militia
operation in outlying territory. Josh Murray has a
report from Dili.
TEXT: Reacting at short notice to reports of murder
and other violence at Comay, about 250 kilometers East
of Dili, helicopter-supported infantry troops swept
through the town. INTERFET Chief of Staff Colonel
Mark Kelly says they arrested about 15 alleged militia
members and seized a supply of high-powered military-
style weapons.
/// KELLY ACT ///
This swift action has provided immediate support for
the many hundreds of people in that location who have
clearly been under threat and duress.
/// END ACT ///
Meantime, a multi-national force is travelling to the
hills around Dalay Tuesday afternoon, to speak to
local resistance fighters and urge them to bring the
people back to their homes. (Signed)
