INTRO: Australian officials lashed out Tuesday at
Indonesia, saying there is a campaign to discredit
Australia's leadership of the multi-national
peacekeeping force in East Timor. As Amy Bickers
reports from Jakarta, the comments come after a series
of Indonesian media reports, claiming Australian
troops are torturing pro-independence militia men.
Text: Australia said Tuesday that there is a
deliberate campaign of disinformation in Indonesia
aimed at discrediting Australia, which is at the helm
of the multinational force in East Timor.
Interviewed by the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation, John McCarthy, Australia's ambassador to
Indonesia, denounced reports in the Indonesian media
alleging atrocities by Australian troops in East
Timor.
/// McCarthy Act ///
There is truly a misinformation campaign which some
elements in this country are engaging in which is
meant to discredit Australia and
Australia's leadership of the multi-national force. I
continue to reject it and I tell Indonesia I reject
it.
/// End Act ///
Bilateral relations between Australia and Indonesia
have plunged over East Timor, with many Indonesians
saying that Australia has impinged on
their country's sovereignty. (Signed)
