INTRO: President Clinton says he hopes Indonesia will
emerge from the current crisis over East Timor to play
a positive role in Asia's future. VOA's David Gollust
reports from the White House.
TEXT: Though the United States has reduced military
ties with Indonesia because of the violence in East
Timor, Mr. Clinton is leaving the door open to better
relations with Jakarta. In a talk with reporters
early Monday (as he left on a trip to Louisiana), Mr.
Clinton said this is a time of great instability and
uncertainty for Indonesians:
///CLINTON ACTUALITY///
We should stand against those actions which violate
human rights and which are wrong. But we should also
hope that both stability and humane policies will be
returned to Indonesia as soon as possible.
///END ACT///
Mr. Clinton said he hopes Indonesia can live up to its
great potential for progress and positive influence in
Asia. Whether it does, he said, depends on
"responsible leadership" in Jakarta and "appropriate
responses" from the United States and others
countries. (SIGNED)
