VOICED AT:
INTRO: The U-S Senate Foreign Relations Committee has
voted to cut off nearly all aid to Indonesia in
reaction to the violence in East Timor. V-O-A's David
Swan reports.
TEXT: The Clinton administration has already halted
some military assistance. But Democratic Senator Russ
Feingold, who sponsored the Senate proposal, says the
United States must turn up pressure on Jakarta.
/// FEINGOLD ACT ///
The bill is still very important to make it
clear to the Indonesian government and the
military that we have not lost interest in this
and are not going to lose interest in it.
/// END ACT ///
The measure would stop all military and economic aid,
except food and medicine, for East Timor. It would
also require U-S officials to fight any loans or
credits by the International Monetary Fund or other
institutions.
The bill must still clear the full Senate and House of
Representatives, then be signed by the president. Mr.
Feingold predicts if Congress approves the cutoff, the
White House will go along.(Signed)
