INTRO: The commander of the multi-national
peacekeeping force in East Timor has warned that the
territory's pro-Indonesia militias could resume their
violent attacks. Australian Broadcasting
Corporation's Jeff Thompson in Dili reports despite
expanded operations by international troops, East
Timor remains a dangerous place.
TEXT: With one Dutch journalist dead in Dili, the
commander of the multi-national peacekeeping force in
East Timor, Major General Peter Cosgrove, says the
resources of the international force are already
stretched and can not protect everyone.
But now the international troops have made their first
major incursion outside of the capital, by landing 150
soldiers in the eastern town of Baucau, where a large
airfield is located.
In Dili, the U-N's compound has been secured by 150
British Gurkha troops. Interaction with pro-Jakarta
militia has also intensified. The international
forces have now confiscated several hundred militia
weapons, including homemade pistols, rifles, machetes
and swords. (SIGNED)
