VOICED AT:
INTRO: Hundreds of international peacekeepers landed
in the East Timorese capital Dili, Monday to restore
order in the unstable province. Josh Murray reports
from Dili, the commander of the mission says troops
met with little resistance but added East Timor is
still a volatile place.
TEXT: Major General Peter Cosgrove has met many of the
Australian troops as they hustled off C-130 Hercules
aircrafts into the remains of Dili airport. This will
be the main Australian base for the next 24 to 48
hours as the tons of supplies this operation will
require are unloaded here and at the major ports.
General Cosgrove says there have been no skirmishes
with the militia within the first 12 hours of the
operation and he says Indonesian troops have begun a
systematic process of withdrawl from East Timor.
General Cosgrove will hold talks with his Indonesian
counterparts before his troops push out from this
place. He says East Timor remains a volatile and
unpredictable area, but so far things are going very
well. (signed)
