//Editors - This is a pool report from the troop
landings in Dili. Jeff Thompson of the Australian
Broadcast Corporation gives a neutral sign-off. He
was one of only two radio reporters with the
Australian troops going into Dili Monday.//
INTRO: International peacekeepers have begun their
mission of securing the East Timorese capital, Dili
Monday. Jeff Thompson, a "pool" reporter from the
Australian Broadcast Coporation, is in Dili and
reports the troops met little resistance from anti-
independence militia groups believed to be behind the
violence.
TEXT: Whichever direction one looks at Dili's airport
Australian soldiers can be seen. For the first time
in history, Australian soldiers outnumber Indonesian
soldiers at key facilities in East Timor's capital.
Armored personnel carriers rolled off C-130 Hercules
aircraft. In trucks and jeeps Australian and other
multi-national contingents are moving around Dili.
At the port, Australian and New Zealand soldiers came
across two armed militia men, whom they disarmed with
the assistance of the Indonesian military.
Major General Peter Cosgrove said there was some
shooting in Dili last night, but as yet no solider had
encountered an aggressive situation.
General Cosgrove congratulated the Indonesian military
on the spirit of cooperation and said Operation
Stabilize is being treated more like an arrival than
an aggressive insertion. (signed)
