/// EDS: PORTUGUESE ACT IN BUBBLE ///
Intro: Brazil has dispatched a contingent of military
police to East Timor to join the multinational
peacekeeping force trying to restore order in the
former Portuguse colony. VOA's Bill Rodgers reports
from Rio de Janeiro.
Text: The Brazilian force of 50 military police left
Brasilia on Monday following a ceremony presided over
by Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Mr.
Cardoso said Brazil could not remain indifferent to the
plight of the former Portuguese colony, which he
described as sharing the same language and same
cultural heritage with Brazil. The Brazilian leader
praised members of the force as brave men, and later
told reporters his government is willing to send more
troops to East Timor if asked.
/// CARDOSO PORTUGUESE ACT ///
The families of the 50 Brazilian volunteers attended
the ceremony, and many had tears in their eyes as their
loved ones prepared to depart.
Brazil participated in the U-N peacekeeping operation
in Angola in the mid-1990's. On that occasion, Brazil
sent 11-hundred soldiers to the African nation over a
three-year period. (Signed)
