INTRO: Some Indonesian troops have begun to
withdraw from violence-ravaged East Timor, where
the first international peacekeepers are
expected to arrive Saturday. V-O-A's Kyle King
has this report from Jakarta.
TEXT: Australian military officials say the
commander of the multinational force -- Major
General Peter Cosgrove -- is expected to land in
East Timor, Saturday.
The first order of business for the small
advance party will be securing the U-N
headquarters in Dili and making contact with
Indonesian army commanders.
Meanwhile, some Indonesian troops have begun
withdrawing from East Timor, in what military
officials describe as a readjustment of their
forces.
Indonesia has pledged cooperation with the eight
thousand-person peacekeeping force, but analysts
warn of a potentially-explosive situation.
Australian military officials say they are
concerned about possible resistance from
Indonesian troops who have sided with the anti-
independence militias blamed for the violence.
