DATE=9/15/1999 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT TITLE=CLINTON EAST TIMOR UPDATE (L) NUMBER=2-253900 BYLINE=DEBORAH TATE DATELINE=CHRISTCHURCH INTERNET=YES CONTENT= VOICED AT: INTRO: President Clinton is anticipating the deployment of U-N peacekeepers in East Timor soon. Correspondent Deborah Tate reports from Christchurch, New Zealand where the president concluded a five-day visit to the country. TEXT: Just hours before the United Nations voted to approve a peacekeeping force for East Timor, Mr. Clinton spoke of the mission during a joint news conference with New Zealand Prime Minister Jenny Shipley. /// CLINTON ACT /// We know that this international peacekeeping force will face some stiff challenges. But we have affirmed together that we will meet these challenges. With our support, the people of East Timor can have the independence and the democracy they have voted for. By fostering stability there, and in helping Indonesia to resume its progress in undergoing the profound transitions at work there. /// END ACT /// The United States will provide logistical support to the Australian-led mission, transporting troops and undertaking communications and intelligence services. The president urged Indonesia to stop, what he called, the most egregious forms of violence and allow non- governmental organizations to provide humanitarian relief. The United States is responding to the humanitarian crisis. The U-S Agency for International Development is sending 300-thousand daily food rations to refugee camps near Darwin, Australia.
