INTRO: A Singapore newspaper says Indonesia's
top military commander may resign his post so he
can make a run for the presidency. From
Jakarta, VOA's Kyle King reports.
TEXT: Singapore's Straits Times newspaper
quotes an unnamed source as saying General
Wiranto will step down as the country's top
military commander in early October.
The powerful general had no immediate reaction
to the report, which says he wants to give up
command of the army so he can be the
presidential candidate of the Golkar party.
The Indonesian General Assembly is scheduled to
open a general session in mid-October, and
choose a new president in early November.
An official of the Golkar party is quoted as
saying the party has not yet decided if it will
dump current President B-J Habibie as its
candidate.
Diplomats in Jakarta reacted cautiously to the
report. They say few news organizations have
close contacts to the Indonesian military.
General Wiranto has never ruled out a possible
run as Vice President. (signed)
