VOICED AT:
Intro: Brazil plans to send a small contingent to
participate in the multinational peacekeeping force to
restore order in East Timor. VOA's Bill Rodgers
reports from Rio de Janeiro.
Text: Brazilian officials say between 30 and 50
volunteers of the military police will form part of the
United Nations peacekeeping force for East Timor. The
officials say the men will be sent first to Australia,
where they will join soldiers from other nations being
deployed to the former Portuguese colony.
Brazil, a Portuguese-speaking nation, participated in
the U-N peacekeeping operation in Angola in the mid
1990's. On that occasion, Brazil sent 11-hundred
soldiers to the African nation over a three-year
period.
Press reports early this week indicated Brazil might
send a specially trained battalion of 800 men to East
Timor. But officials said the decision was made to
send a much smaller contingent because of the need by
the United Nations to deploy the peacekeepers quickly.
