VOICED AT:
INTRO: President Clinton says it appears talks
between Indonesia and the United Nations on the
composition of an international peacekeeping force for
East Timor are going well. Mr. Clinton is monitoring
developments from Queenstown, New Zealand, where he
spent a day of relaxation Tuesday. Correspondent
Deborah Tate reports.
Text: When asked if Indonesia is going along with
what the United Nations envisions for a peacekeeping
mission in East Timor - a force that would be led by
Australians and dominated by Asians - the President
said it appeared so. But he added he wanted to get
detailed briefings on the matter.
He underscored the need to deploy the force soon.
// Clinton actuality //
I think the important thing is to get the force
mobilized, get it in a hurry, and also get the
humanitarian aid out there. There are a lot of people
still actually in East Timor who need food and
supplies, so we've got a lot of work to do.
// end act //
Before leaving for Queenstown from Auckland early
Tuesday, Mr. Clinton expressed confidence the US
Congress would support US participation in the UN
force - especially since it would be limited in scope
and involve no combat troops.
The President spent the day in this alpine resort town
playing golf with Burton Shipley, the husband of Prime
Minister Jenny Shipley.
He travels to Christchurch Wednesday for a meeting
with the Prime Minister and to deliver a speech on
international efforts to curb global warming. He is
scheduled to return to Washington Thursday morning.
