INTRO: The latest spasm of violence and killing to
rock the province of East Timor has focused world
attention on a long simmering problem. It has also
triggered an emotional debate inside Indonesia that
some people fear could tear the country apart. From
Jakarta, VOA's Kyle King reports.
TEXT: Outside the Australian embassy in
Jakarta, protesters have held almost daily
demonstrations against foreign interference in
East Timor.
Tuesday's rally brought university students.
One young woman said she was there to show her
anger at Australia's efforts to play a lead role
in the international peacekeeping force being
planned for the embattled province.

From my personnel opinion, I agree that
the U-N peacekeeping force will keep the
peace in East Timor. But we think the
Australian government has its own
interests with the East Timor problem.

The student rally was triggered by televised
pictures of Australian demonstrators burning the
Indonesian flag and the belief that Indonesia's
neighbor to the south has its eye on East
Timor's mineral wealth.
Earlier rallies were staged by children of
soldiers who served in East Timor and groups who
