INTRO: The United States press is reacting with
almost unanimous approval in its editorial columns to
news that Indonesia has agreed to a force of
international peacekeepers to regain order in East
Timor.
We get a sampling now from ____________ in today's U-S
Opinion Roundup.
TEXT: Plans are underway for a multi-national force,
under U-N auspices, to restore order in East Timor.
While a few papers are skeptical about U-S involvement
in this faraway place, most are pleased that the
violence may be coming to an end. We begin our
sampling in Nebraska, where The Omaha World Herald
says the first task is to "stop the killing."
VOICE: (Indonesian President B-J) Habibie has
conceded the obvious - his defense forces can't
control the situation -and so relief may be in sight
within a few days. Australia . expects to send a
force of up to seven-thousand on short-notice
deployment. This is appropriate, given the geography
and the fact that Australia has been among the
staunchest advocates of intervention. . So far, at
least, this is a regional problem in need of regional
