VOICED AT:
INTRO: Indonesia's willingness to accept a U-N-
backed international peacekeeping force has
brought calls for a swift deployment to the
violence torn province. From Jakarta, V-O-A's
Kyle King reports.
TEXT: United Nations officials in East Timor
say the situation there remains tense, and tens
of thousands of refugees are in desperate need
of humanitarian assistance.
A week of killing and looting by anti-
independence militias in the province drove more
than 100 thousand people from their homes.
U-N officials, who still have a small staff at
their besieged compound in Dili, say they are
examining ways to bring relief supplies to the
area as quickly as possible.
East Timorese independence leader Xanana Gusmao
applauded Indonesian President B-J Habibie's
decision to allow U-N troops into the province
and appealed for a rapid deployment.
Speaking from the British Embassy in Jakarta,
the independence leader said he would support
any effort to stabilize the territory. (Signed)
