INTRO: U-N Human Rights Commissioner Mary
Robinson says Indonesian President B-J Habibie
is considering the establishment of a joint U-N
Indonesian panel to look into human rights
abuses in East Timor. From Jakarta,
Correspondent Kyle King reports.
TEXT: The U-N Human Rights commissioner told
reporters after meeting with President Habibie
that she proposed the establishment of a
dedicated tribunal too look into allegations of
human rights abuses in East Timor.
She told reporters President Habibie reaffirmed
his commitment to human rights. She said the
matter should be pursued by a commission of
inquiry, a panel of experts to look at the
evidence of human-rights violations.
Indonesia's Human-Rights commissioner, Marsuki
Darusman, says the President agreed a commission
of inquiry should be considered.
U-N workers and refugees have given numerous
first-hand accounts of Indonesian Police and
Soldiers taking part in the wave of violence and
killings carried out by anti-independence
militiamen in East Timor. (SIGNED)
