INTRO: U-N Human-Rights Commissioner Mary
Robinson says humanitarian aid must be brought
immediately to refugees in East and West Timor,
where many are reported to be facing starvation.
From Jakarta, Correspondent Kyle King reports.
TEXT: The U-N Human Rights Commissioner told
reporters in the Indonesian capital that it is
vital to have security in East and West Timor so
humanitarian supplies can be brought in.
U-N officials say many of the refugees who fled
the violence and killing that erupted after last
month's independence referendum in East Timor,
are scavenging for food and face starvation.
U-N officials have called for emergency airdrops
for the refugees.
Ms. Robinson says the first priority must be to
save lives by making sure there is enough food
and water for people who are frightened and
starving. Then she said there can be a stable
situation that will allow the results of the
independence referendum to be implemented.
