INTRO: The U-N High Commissioner for Refugees, Sadako
Ogata is urging a speedy deployment of international
peacekeeping troops in East Timor. Lisa Schlein in
Geneva reports the U-N Refugee Agency says it is ready
to launch a relief operation into East Timor
immediately.
TEXT: The U-N Refugee Agency says it is racing
against time to help save tens-of-thousands of lives
in East Timor. It says thousands of terrified
Timorese have been affected by weeks of violence and
forcible displacement.
U-N-H-C-R Spokesman, Kris Janowski says the situation
in the capital, Dili has quieted down somewhat. And
U-N staff, for the first time in weeks, has been able
to leave the compound and move around the city. He
says about one-thousand terrified people are still
taking refuge at the U-N compound.
In addition, he says thousands of other people are
waiting at the harbor. Mr. Janowski says the
Indonesian authorities have told them they would be
taken to West Timor.

The High Commissioner is worried about forced
expulsions, possible relocation of East Timorese
to elsewhere in Indonesia. And, that is why she
