VOICED AT:
INTRO: President Clinton has welcomed Indonesian
President B-J Habibie's decision to allow an
international peacekeeping force in East Timor to
restore order in the territory. Correspondent Deborah
Tate reports from Auckland, New Zealand, where Mr.
Clinton is attending an Asia-Pacific Economic summit.
TEXT: On his way to a meeting with APEC leaders Mr.
Clinton underscored the importance of deploying the
force soon.
The President says the United States has been asked by
Australia - which will lead the force - to provide
logistics support, including airlifting troops to East
Timor, and providing transportation, communications
and intelligence services.
He says U.S. troops should work closely with the
Indonesians, but he says the Indonesian military
should not have a say in the composition of the
mission.
/// CLINTON ACTUALITY ///
They should not be able to say who is in or not
in the force and what the structure of the force
would be, otherwise it will raise all kinds of
questions about whether there will be integrity
in the force, and it will also delay
implementation.
/// END ACT ///
He says details are being worked out, and require
extensive consultations with Congress. (Signed)
