VOICED AT:
INTRO: President Clinton is considering providing U-S
logistical support for a U-N peacekeeping force in
East Timor -- if Indonesia asks for such a mission and
the United Nations approves. Correspondent Deborah
Tate reports form Auckland, New Zealand, where the
president is attending a Pacific Rim trade summit.
Text: Mr. Clinton says he is consulting with members
of congress about the possibility of having U-S troops
airlift peacekeepers from other countries into East
Timor. The U-S forces would take part in
communications and intelligence. But he says no
decisions have been made.
Later, National Security Advisor Sandy Berger said Mr.
Clinton has not ruled other forms of American
participation in such a mission.
He says the president is urging regional leaders
gathered here to use their influence to press Jakarta
to drop its opposition to international intervention -
saying it was very much in Jakarta's interest.
// BERGER ACTUALITY //
The consequences for Indonesia proceeding on this
course far outweigh whatever benefit they could hope
to gain from maintaining control of East Timor by
force.
// END ACTUALITY //
The President -- who has suspended military sales and
defense cooperation with Indonesia -- has threatened
to cut economic assistance, if Jakarta does not
restore order in East Timor. (Signed)
