INTRO: President Clinton has raised the possibility
of sending U.S. military personnel to East Timor to
support a UN peacekeeping force there, if Indonesia
asks for such a mission and the United Nations
approves. Correspondent Deborah Tate reports form
Auckland, New Zealand, where the President is
attending a Pacific Rim trade summit.
Text: Although U.S. officials say there are no plans
to contribute troops to an international peacekeeping
force in East Timor, Mr. Clinton says he is
considering the possibility of sending American
logistical support for such an operation.
At the start of a meeting with South Korean President
Kim Dae Jung and Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi
Sunday (local time) on the sidelines of the Asia-
Pacific Economic summit, Mr. Clinton says he
discussing the prospects of an American military
presence in East Timor with APEC leaders and members
of the U.S. Congress.
He says his discussions...
// Clinton actuality //
..have centered around our providing some of the
things only we can provide probably, like
extensive airlift support to bring troops from
other countries, primarily in Asia into the
theater, other logistical support, intelligence,
communications, some things which would require
a presence in a limited way, within the country,
within East Timor.
// end act //
Mr. Clinton says the international community will
continue to pressure Jakarta to accept an
international peacekeeping force in East Timor.
But earlier, Indonesia's ambassador to the United
Nations ruled out any international force for now,
saying his country's imposition of martial law is
restoring order. (signed)
